HGK Shipping has officially named its latest gas tanker, GAS 96, in Rotterdam — a vessel designed with a “future-fuel-ready” diesel-electric propulsion system and optimised for operation in extreme shallow-water conditions.

Built for long-term charter with LyondellBasell, GAS 96 will operate between Rotterdam, Antwerp and Cologne, transporting pressurised liquefied gases while maintaining supply resilience even when draughts drop to 1.2 metres.

The 110-metre vessel, developed at HGK’s Design Center, anticipates future energy and cargo trends — including ammonia transport and methanol-based propulsion — with a modular system that allows for future fuel integration.

“The GAS 96 is not just a tanker for the present, but also one for the future,” said Anke Bestmann, Managing Director of HGK Gas Shipping.

“It’s designed to meet our customers’ evolving needs while cutting fuel use and emissions.”
