South Korean shipyard HD Hyundai has secured an order worth about $1.46 billion to build eight 13,400-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships for South Korean liner company HMM.

The contract was signed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

Two ships will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and six by HD Hyundai Samho, with deliveries scheduled consecutively through the first half of 2029.

The vessels will measure 337 meters in length and 51 meters in width, and will be fitted with LNG dual-fuel engines and enlarged fuel tanks to improve operating efficiency.

HD Hyundai said this is its largest container ship order volume in 18 years. The company has secured orders for about 720,000 TEU across 69 container ships so far this year.

An HD Hyundai representative said the group aims to “lead the decarbonization of the shipbuilding and shipping industries” through eco-friendly, high-efficiency vessels.
