Hyundai Motor Group has agreed with Pyeongtaek City and several partners to develop hydrogen infrastructure at Pyeongtaek Port, including plans for future hydrogen and ammonia bunkering facilities.

The initiative centres on linking a nearby hydrogen production complex to port facilities through a 15-km pipeline, supplying fuel-cell power generators to Kia and Hyundai Glovis operations in the port. The system is intended to form the basis for wider hydrogen use in port activities and, eventually, marine fuels.

Ken Ramirez, Head of Global Energy & Hydrogen Business Division at Hyundai Motor Group, said: “Hyundai is honoured to jointly drive this important collaboration as a public-private partnership aimed at delivering real-world hydrogen applications to achieve the goals of both, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ ‘Hydrogen Port’ policy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘Hydrogen City’ policy.”

As part of its longer-term strategy, the Group plans to develop both hydrogen and ammonia bunkering facilities to serve future clean ships. It will also explore Alternative Maritime Power systems to reduce emissions from berthed vessels.

Hyundai Motor began operating Korea’s first hydrogen-powered auto-transport truck between its Asan plant and Pyeongtaek Port in late 2024, supporting its broader plan to establish a hydrogen-based logistics and fuel ecosystem at the port.
