The delay to the IMO’s Net Zero Framework (NZF) has pushed more shipowners to consider LNG propulsion, according to marine engine maker WinGD.

Benny Hilström, Vice President Market Development at WinGD Ltd, said the pause in global regulation has improved LNG’s near-term business case by removing immediate pressure to switch to more expensive synthetic fuels.

“Without a global carbon pricing policy and strong short-term incentives for e-fuels, LNG remains the most affordable, widely available and technically mature alternative fuel,” Hilström said.

He said WinGD’s X-DF dual-fuel LNG engines are already capable of running on zero- and near-zero-emission fuels such as bio-methane and e-methane without modification, allowing owners to transition away from fossil LNG over time.

Hilström said the absence of clear, binding global policy has delayed investment in cleaner methane fuels, but increased interest in LNG as a practical compliance option for vessels ordered today.

WinGD said its dual-fuel engines have been in service since 2016, with more than 900 engines sold and over 8 million running hours, and that continuous technical improvements have significantly reduced methane slip and overall emissions.
