The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) has set up a new working group to enhance verification of feedstocks in certified supply chains.
The group, called Chemical Analytics of Feedstocks, will develop analytical methods to detect key characteristics of materials and embed these tools into ISCC’s certification integrity processes. The initial focus will be on high-risk feedstocks such as used cooking oil (UCO), with scope to expand to others.
ISCC said the initiative aims to improve traceability and reliability in sustainability certification, following increased scrutiny from the EU. The platform brings together experts from academia, certification bodies and analytical service providers. Its first meeting took place on 6 August, with a follow-up planned for early September.
The move comes after ongoing concerns about fraud cases, including palm oil mill effluent relabelling and rising imports of advanced biofuels from Asia, which have exposed weaknesses in supply chain traceability.
ISCC has invited additional technical experts to join the group and contribute to developing science-based verification methods aligned with evolving EU regulations.
