KN Energies has carried out the first-ever virtual liquefaction of bio-LNG in the Baltic region at its Klaipeda LNG terminal, in collaboration with Equinor and Gasum.
As part of the operation, bio-LNG was loaded onto Gasum’s chartered vessel Coral Energy, while Equinor managed the virtual liquefaction process. The achievement was announced by KN Energies in a statement on Wednesday.
Under the virtual concept, the biomethane is not physically liquefied at the terminal. Instead, its renewable properties are transferred via certification systems to the conventional LNG loaded on site, ensuring that the cargo retains its green credentials.
“With this milestone, the Klaipėda LNG terminal has become the first facility in the Baltic region to provide virtual biomethane liquefaction services,” KN Energies said. “Currently, only a few of Europe’s 28 operational LNG terminals offer either physical or virtual biomethane liquefaction.”
