About 67 containers fell from ZIM’s container ship Mississippi at the Port of Long Beach in the US on Tuesday morning, with several landing on an emissions control barge alongside the vessel.

Images released by the US Coast Guard show the containers piled across the barge.

Based on those images, the unit appears to be a STAX Engineering emissions capture system, which is used in California to trap vessel exhaust gases while ships are at berth.

The Port of Long Beach said the barge was damaged in the incident, but no injuries have been reported and wider port operations remain unaffected.

“The Coast Guard established a safety zone 500 yards around the Mississippi and is issuing marine safety broadcasts every hour to alert other vessels of the navigation and safety hazards,” the port said.
