A.P. Moller – Maersk, based in Copenhagen and one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, said it will resume using the Suez Canal on its Middle East–India to US East Coast route after a period of diversion around the Cape of Good Hope.
“This decision follows a continued stabilisation of conditions in and around the Red Sea, including the Suez corridor, as well as improved stability and reliability in the region, allowing us to return to the service pattern originally designed to provide our customers with the most efficient transit times,” the company said.
Maersk said it will continue to closely monitor the security situation in the region and warned that sailings could again be rerouted if conditions deteriorate.
“The safety of crew, assets, and customers’ cargo remains the highest priority,” the company said, adding that contingency plans remain in place in case of renewed instability.
The Red Sea crisis was triggered by attacks on commercial shipping by Yemen’s Houthi movement following the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in October 2023, forcing most major container lines to divert vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.
