Malaysia has opened Maharani Freeport in Muar, a new deep-water hub designed to support energy trading and maritime services on the Strait of Malacca. The project, developed by Maharani Energy Gateway (MEG), was launched by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

Backed by both federal and state authorities, the freeport has been declared a National Project and is expected to draw major investment into Johor. MEG says the site is already operating, handling oil trading, storage, transhipment, blending and bunkering.

MEG Executive Chairman Dato’ Dr. Daing A. Malek Bin Daing A. Rahaman said the launch was an important moment for the region. “Maharani Freeport is a bold and transformative project,” he said. He added that the development could support at least 45,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The 3,200-acre plan spans three reclaimed islands and includes a deep seaport able to take VLCCs, industrial areas and financial services, along with tax incentives aimed at attracting global companies.
