Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has completed a biofuel bunkering operation in Singapore for its capesize bulk carrier, the Lambert Maru, which is operated on behalf of mining major Anglo American.
The vessel is now sailing on a B30 biofuel blend.
The trial forms part of MOL’s carbon inset framework, the Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance, under which greenhouse gas reduction credits from the voyage will be digitally certified and allocated to Anglo American for its Scope 3 reporting.
The B30 fuel, certified under the ISCC-EU, is made from waste cooking oil and is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 30% compared to conventional fuels.
MOL said the use of biofuels is a viable drop-in solution, requiring no vessel modifications, and is aligned with its Blue Action 2035 strategy to accelerate the shift to clean fuels.
