Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has reported a 98% reduction in methane slip during full-scale sea trials of its LNG-fuelled coal carrier REIMEI, part of a joint project with Kanadevia Corporation and Yanmar Power Solutions.
The initiative, supported by Japan’s Green Innovation Fund and led by NEDO, targets the development of next-generation methane slip reduction systems through catalyst and engine improvements.
Trials began in May 2025 on routes between Japan and Australia, achieving results that exceeded both land-based tests and the project’s 70% reduction goal. MOL said continued trials through FY2026 will evaluate long-term performance and durability, paving the way for commercial rollout from FY2027.
The company said the breakthrough underlines its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing cleaner LNG technologies across its fleet.
