Molgas UK has completed the first LNG de-gassing operation ever undertaken in the United Kingdom, in partnership with CalMac Ferries Limited and AD Fuels.
The operation took place on board the MV Glen Sannox during its annual overhaul at Inchgreen, Greenock, marking what the companies described as a significant milestone in the UK’s shift toward cleaner marine energy.
“We are proud to have completed this first-of-its-kind project safely and efficiently, showcasing Molgas’s technical strength and our commitment to supporting the maritime industry in its decarbonization journey,” said Christopher McConnell of Molgas.
LNG de-gassing is the process of safely removing all remaining liquefied natural gas and vapour from a vessel’s fuel tanks.
It involves warming, ventilating and purging the tanks to eliminate any flammable gases. The procedure ensures the tanks are fully gas-free so maintenance and inspections can be carried out safely.
Molgas said it will continue developing LNG and bio-LNG solutions aimed at helping ship operators and ports reduce emissions and adopt cleaner fuels.
