The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has urged ship operators, harbour craft and pleasure craft owners to exercise heightened safety and vigilance during the Christmas and New Year festive period, citing an expected rise in vessel traffic and passenger movements in the Port of Singapore.

In a port marine notice issued on December 23, MPA said festive periods typically see heavier port activity, increasing navigational and operational risks.

The authority reminded the maritime community that safety remains its top priority.

MPA called on operators to conduct risk assessments before commencing activities, closely monitor weather conditions, and ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is used. Crews and passengers should also be briefed before departure on emergency procedures and the location of life-saving and firefighting equipment.

The notice further stressed the importance of safe navigation practices, the use of lifejackets where there is a risk of falling overboard, and strict adherence to drug and alcohol policies, Singapore Port Regulations and international collision prevention rules.
