Norway’s FuelEU Maritime Implementation Timeline Slips Again

Norway’s implementation of the FuelEU Maritime regulation has been delayed after discussions between the EEA/EFTA states and the European Union failed to reach the necessary clarifications within the required timeframe.

Authorities had earlier expected the regulation to be applied in Norway from January 1, 2026. However, the unresolved EEA-EU process means the rules cannot enter into force on that date.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority said entry into force is now expected later in 2026, although a precise timeline has not yet been confirmed. Updates will be published on the authority’s website once further details are available.

FuelEU Maritime forms part of the EU’s broader framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and requires incorporation into the European Economic Area (EEA) before it can be applied in Norway.
