Environmental group Pacific Environment has praised the signing of a new MoU between Singapore and South Korea to establish a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor aimed at accelerating maritime decarbonisation.

The MOU was signed by Singapore’s Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow and Korea’s Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae Soo. The agreement will see both countries cooperate to support the transition to zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emission fuels, expand clean bunkering infrastructure and enhance digitalisation across the maritime sector.

“Pacific Environment applauds Republic of Korea’s leadership and investment in zero-emissions shipping,” said Hyunju Kang, Asia climate campaign director at Pacific Environment.

“We extend our sincere congratulations to the Republic of Korea for achieving tangible outcomes through the Green Shipping Corridor.

“The Republic of Korea has consistently demonstrated strong will and dedication to advancing a cleaner and more sustainable maritime industry. We look forward to both nations further strengthening their cooperation and showing global leadership in expanding infrastructure and developing clean fuels on maritime decarbonization.”

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will explore joint initiatives including fuel trials, technical alignment, knowledge exchange and training for maritime stakeholders.

“Such collaborative regional action is crucial toward meaningful decarbonization,” added Jie Ying Lim, Singapore climate specialist at Pacific Environment.
