The Port of Melbourne has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Shanghai to develop a Green Shipping Corridor between the two ports, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing trade between Australia and China.
The agreement, formalised during the 2025 North Bund Forum in Shanghai on 19 October, is supported by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and aligns with the goals of the Clydebank Declaration.
Under the partnership, Port of Melbourne and the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission will collaborate with industry players – including Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), COSCO SHIPPING Lines, HAMR Energy, and ABEL Energy – to promote cleaner shipping practices and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon fuels.
The initiative will also explore opportunities to strengthen the low-carbon fuel supply chain, from production and transportation to storage, while encouraging greater use of renewable energy and clean technologies in port operations and shipping.
