Houston-based Sandpiper Chemicals plans to develop a blue methanol plant in the US state of Texas, with a production capacity of 1.1 million metric tons per year, targeting the growing market for low-emission marine fuels.

The facility will use carbon capture and storage (CCS) to cut CO₂ emissions and will be among the first large-scale blue methanol projects in the US.

Topsoe will provide its SynCOR autothermal reforming technology for the plant, enabling efficient methanol production while capturing carbon emissions.

Methanol’s share in the global bunker fuels supply is expected to grow over the coming years as more dual-fuel ships join the global shipping fleet.

With its logistical location on the U.S. Gulf Coast, our project is well positioned to meet the needs of our customers, both domestically and internationally,” said Rod J. Ragan, CEO of Sandpiper Chemicals.

The plant adds momentum to a growing wave of blue and green methanol projects as the global maritime industry accelerates its shift toward lower-carbon energy solutions.
