SCHOTTEL will provide rudder propellers for a new series of seven electric, double-ended ferries ordered by Scotland’s state-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).
The vessels will be built by Poland’s Remontowa Shipbuilding, with the first delivery expected in 2027. They will operate on routes along Scotland’s west coast as part of efforts to cut emissions from regional ferry services.
Each ferry will be fitted with four SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers (SRP 100 L), designed to improve manoeuvrability, reliability and operational safety through built-in redundancy. The L-Drive configuration has been selected to reduce mechanical losses, lower maintenance requirements and minimise noise and vibration.
“To ensure these vessels meet the demands of our network, we focused on manoeuvrability, redundancy and reliability. With SCHOTTEL’s modern propulsion systems, we are confident that all these requirements are fully met,” said Jim Anderson, Director of Vessels at CMAL.
The ferries will feature fast-reacting azimuth steering for improved handling in harsh conditions and will be supported by SCHOTTEL’s MariHub monitoring system for condition-based maintenance.
All seven vessels will be fully electric, allowing zero-emission operations, with batteries charged overnight.
