Sumitomo Corporation has been awarded a government grant under MPA’s Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund to support research and development focused on enhancing the safety and efficiency of ammonia bunkering at the Port of Singapore.

The company plans to conduct a full-scale demonstration in 2027, working closely with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to establish safety protocols, operational guidelines, and emergency response measures for handling ammonia as a marine fuel.

In parallel, Sumitomo is part of a consortium led by Keppel Ltd — along with Advario Asia Pacific — appointed by the MPA and the Energy Market Authority to advance a low- or zero-carbon ammonia solution on Jurong Island for both power generation and bunkering.

Sumitomo said these initiatives align with its broader commitment to maritime decarbonisation and energy transformation under its current Medium-Term Management Plan.
