Towage provider Svitzer has named its first electric tugboat — and Denmark’s first — at a ceremony in Copenhagen.
The vessel, Svitzer Ingrid, is equipped with a 1,808 kWh battery, roughly equivalent to the capacity of 23 electric cars.
Operating primarily in fully electric mode, it can complete around 90% of harbour towage tasks on battery power alone. The tug can be fully recharged in about 3.5 hours and delivers a bollard pull of 70 tonnes.
Svitzer estimates the hybrid design will cut CO₂ emissions by 600–900 tonnes annually.
A diesel engine is also fitted, allowing the tug to switch to hybrid mode when battery levels are low.
The company, which operates a fleet of about 450 tugs worldwide, said it expects to induct a second electric tug next year as part of its strategy to accelerate the transition to low- and zero-emission towage solutions.
