Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has delivered TEN-OH, Japan’s first tugboat powered by hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines, marking a major milestone in the country’s maritime decarbonisation efforts.

Delivered on 15 October 2025 from Tsuneishi’s factory in Fukuyama, the tugboat is equipped with BEH2YDRO’s high-output hydrogen dual-fuel engines and a high-pressure hydrogen gas storage system developed by JPNH2YDRO — a joint venture between Tsuneishi Group and Belgium’s CMB.TECH.

The twin 12-cylinder engines, delivering around 4,400 horsepower, can operate on both hydrogen and conventional marine fuel.

The vessel carries approximately 250 kg of hydrogen in high-pressure tanks, achieving substantial CO₂ emission reductions while maintaining the same operational performance as standard tugboats.

Built under The Nippon Foundation’s “Zero Emission Ships Project”, TEN-OH represents a key step toward the commercial use of hydrogen as a clean marine fuel in Japan.
