A bulk carrier has sunk and two sailors remain missing after colliding with a container vessel near the Mayoushi Lightship in China’s Lingding Channel, part of the Pearl River Estuary.
The incident, which took place on the evening of 25 October, involved the Chinese-flagged Haili 5 and the inbound Singapore-flagged containership Wan Hai A17.
15 seafarers were onboard the Haili 5 when it went down. The Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration said 13 of them were rescued, while search teams continue to look for the remaining two crew members.
Maritime authorities quickly activated an emergency response, deploying rescue vessels, aircraft, and divers to the site. Temporary traffic restrictions have been imposed in the channel, and ships in the vicinity have been told to maintain a safe distance and follow directions from the Vessel Traffic Service.
There have been no reports so far of damage to or casualties aboard the Wan Hai A17.
The Lingding Channel is one of southern China’s busiest waterways, serving as a key approach route to the ports of Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
