Two dual-fuel LNG carriers being built for QatarEnergy have been named at a ceremony held at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea on 3 December.
The 174,000 cubic meter vessels, SHARQ and SHRA’OUH, are the seventh and eighth ships in a 12-vessel LNG carrier programme backed by joint venture companies involving Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line). Both vessels are designed to operate on LNG under a dual-fuel configuration.
QatarEnergy, the world’s largest LNG supplier, will deploy the newbuildings to transport LNG worldwide under long-term charter arrangements linked to its expanding production and export portfolio.
SHARQ is the first of three vessels in the series to be technically managed by the K LINE Group.
The vessels are equipped with WinGD X-DF 2.1 iCER engines, which use LNG as the primary fuel and are designed to reduce methane slip, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel efficiency compared with earlier dual-fuel LNG carrier designs.
