UK Seeks Industry Input on Decarbonising Smaller Vessels

The UK government has launched a call for evidence (CfE) to explore options for cutting emissions from smaller vessels and niche maritime subsectors not currently covered by carbon pricing or fuel regulations.

The consultation, announced on Wednesday, focuses on vessels under 400 gross tonnes (GT), which form a significant part of domestic shipping emissions. Stakeholders are being asked to provide data on costs, technology, infrastructure and compliance challenges.

Sectors identified as having clearer routes to decarbonisation include inland waterway craft, offshore wind service vessels and port support ships. By contrast, fishing boats, pilot craft and deep-sea tugs are seen as having more complex pathways.

The Department for Transport said the exercise aims to close data gaps and ensure future policy interventions are effective and proportionate, while supporting the UK’s 2050 net-zero target.

A summary of responses is expected to be published in 2025.
