Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has secured an order to equip two 20,000 cbm LNG bunkering vessels currently being built at Zhejiang XinLe Shipbuilding in China. The vessels will be owned by a Hong Kong-based shipowner. The contract was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Under the agreement, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will provide complete LNG cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for both ships. The scope includes system engineering and design, as well as integrated control and monitoring solutions covering the full LNG cargo handling operation.

The company said the order reinforces its position in the small-scale LNG segment, where demand for dedicated bunkering tonnage has grown alongside increasing uptake of LNG as a marine fuel. LNG continues to be viewed by many operators as a transitional option, offering lower sulphur emissions and reduced carbon intensity compared with conventional marine fuels.

“The use of LNG is key in enabling a green shipping future. Our systems provide efficient solutions for bunkering vessels serving LNG-fueled ships and our comprehensive Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems offer a flexible, well-proven solution for operational efficiency”, said Mr Barry Yang, General Manager, Sales, China, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

Equipment deliveries are scheduled to commence in Q4 2026, with vessel deliveries expected in the latter half of 2027.
