Taiwanese shipping firm Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has signed contracts for six 8,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel-ready container ships with Japan’s Nihon Shipyard, Imabari Shipbuilding, and Shoei Kisen Kaisha.

The agreements, signed on October 28, include the purchase of three ships and newbuilding orders for another three.

Deliveries are set to begin in 2028.

The vessels will be Yang Ming’s first to feature methanol dual-fuel-ready specifications and will gradually replace its ageing 5,500 TEU fleet.

Yang Ming said the new ships are designed for high energy efficiency, with features such as a high-efficiency propeller, energy-saving rudder, and rudder fin. Their engines are also prepared for future conversion to green methanol fuel.

The company said the order supports its long-term capacity planning and carbon reduction goals while strengthening its global service network.
