Nordic energy firm Gasum has expanded its FuelEU Maritime pool through a new co-operation deal with Baltic supplier Elenger, allowing Tallink’s vessel MyStar to generate additional compliance for the scheme by running on bio-LNG.
Under the arrangement, Gasum will supply Elenger with bio-LNG via its Pori terminal. Elenger, Tallink’s longstanding fuel partner, will in turn deliver the bio-LNG to the MyStar. The ferry is one of 11 passenger and ro-pax vessels operated by Tallink Group across the Estonia–Finland–Sweden corridor.
Gasum said the addition of the vessel strengthens its pool as companies work to secure compliance units before year end.
“We are very happy to welcome Tallink MyStar into the Gasum FuelEU Maritime pool as a compliance generator… we are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible,” said maritime VP Jacob Granqvist.
Elenger CEO Margus Kaasik noted Tallink’s early shift to LNG in 2017 and said the new step toward renewable bio-LNG continues that trajectory. Tallink Group CEO Paavo Nõgene added that the company aims to replace all LNG consumed by the MyStar and Megastar with biomethane within a year.
FuelEU Maritime requires ships calling at EU ports to progressively lower the carbon intensity of their energy use, encouraging a shift from fossil fuels to alternatives including LNG and bio-LNG. Pooling allows operators to balance the performance of vessels that can use cleaner fuels with those that cannot, reducing overall compliance costs.
Gasum promotes its pool as a reliable option, saying that its role as both a producer and buyer of bio-LNG ensures fuel availability and allows it to take on full responsibility for pooled compliance.
