Classification society DNV has become a knowledge partner of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS), expanding collaboration between the two organisations on the decarbonisation of the maritime industry.
As part of the partnership, DNV will support the centre through the development of decarbonisation pathways and technical insights, examining how shipping emissions could be reduced through a combination of energy-efficiency measures, onboard carbon capture technologies and the uptake of alternative fuels.
The work will also consider regulatory, economic and technological factors, to help industry participants better understand both opportunities and barriers.
In addition, DNV and the centre will collaborate on the development of design concepts, demonstration projects, frameworks and standards to support the maritime sector’s transition to low- and zero-carbon solutions.
Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, said DNV’s global reach and technical expertise would be instrumental as the centre increasingly focuses on implementing near-term decarbonisation measures, while continuing to mature longer-term pathways.
Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO Maritime at DNV, said the collaboration would help deliver the insights and standards needed to accelerate the industry’s transition and overcome key challenges on the path to a low-carbon future.
The centre brings together a broad group of maritime stakeholders to advance decarbonisation through cross-industry collaboration.
