The world’s first dynamic green ammonia plant has started operations in Denmark, marking a major milestone for renewable fuel and power-to-X development.
The facility, owned by Skovgaard Energy and located in Ramme in northwest Jutland, has been developed in partnership with Topsoe and Vestas. It is designed to directly couple renewable electricity with ammonia production while adapting in real time to fluctuations in power supply.
Unlike conventional projects, the plant operates without hydrogen storage, integrating electrolysis and ammonia synthesis in a single dynamic loop. The approach is intended to optimise operations and improve the cost-effectiveness of green ammonia production.
The demonstration plant has an annual production capacity of about 5,000 tonnes of green ammonia and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 9,600 tonnes per year. It has received DKK 81 million (around €11 million) in funding from Denmark’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP).
Topsoe said ammonia is expected to play an increasingly important role in decarbonising sectors such as shipping, agriculture and heavy industry, given its ability to be transported using existing infrastructure and used both as a fuel and as a hydrogen carrier.
The project is powered by a mix of renewable energy, including new solar capacity and existing onshore wind turbines supplied by Vestas.
