ABB has secured contracts to design and build large-scale shore power systems at the Port of Rotterdam, with a combined capacity exceeding 100 MVA.
The project, awarded by Rotterdam Shore Power—a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and Eneco—will supply electricity to three deep-sea container terminals from the second half of 2028.
Once operational, the systems will allow up to 32 container vessels to draw power simultaneously while alongside, enabling ships to shut down their engines during port stays.
ABB’s scope includes engineering, installation, commissioning and long-term service support, with prefabricated and scalable solutions designed to minimise disruption and allow future expansion.
The installations will also support compliance with the EU’s FuelEU Maritime rules, which will require large container and passenger ships to use shore power in EU ports from 2030.
According to Rotterdam Shore Power, widespread use of the systems could cut CO₂ emissions by around 96,000 tonnes per year from 2030, while also reducing noise and improving local air quality.
