Singapore’s first fully electric tug, PXO-ACE-1, has completed commissioning and is expected to enter service in April 2026, following collaboration between PaxOcean Group and ABB.
The 50-ton bollard pull tug was built by PaxOcean, a subsidiary of Kuok Maritime Group, and is the first of its kind to be built and operated in Singapore.
It forms part of the city-state’s broader push to electrify harbour craft.
PXO-ACE-1 is powered by ABB’s integrated electric propulsion system, enabling fully emissions-free operations while significantly reducing noise and vibration compared to conventional diesel tugs.
At the core of the vessel is ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ with PEMS™ power and energy management system, optimising the use of a three-megawatt-hour battery pack to meet variable power demands, including instant high torque during towing operations.
The project aligns with requirements from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which mandate that all newbuild harbour craft must be fully electric or capable of running on B100 biofuel or other net-zero fuels by 2030.
