Union Maritime has added MT SPA to its fleet, marking the delivery of an LR2 tanker equipped with LNG dual-fuel capability and WindWings wind-assist technology developed by BAR Technologies.
The vessel was constructed at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings and is the first of two sister ships ordered to the same specification by Union Maritime. The delivery forms part of the owner’s ongoing fleet renewal programme, which prioritises technologies that are already commercially viable and scalable.
According to Union Maritime, MT SPA has been designed to meet FuelEU Maritime requirements through to 2040. Design evaluations indicate the tanker delivers close to a 50% improvement versus the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline and more than a 27% improvement against the EEDI Phase 3 threshold.
The WindWings installation is intended to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions by harnessing wind energy to supplement LNG propulsion, particularly on suitable trading routes.
Union Maritime said its longer-term strategy remains focused on deploying practical technologies that deliver measurable emissions reductions across its fleet, rather than relying on unproven or speculative solutions.
