Sweden-based Stena RoRo has placed an order for two C-Flexer RoRo vessels featuring diesel-electric-hybrid propulsion, with options for a further four units.
The vessels have been developed in cooperation with Italian naval architecture firm NAOS Ship and Boat Design and form part of Stena RoRo’s strategy to offer flexible and future-ready tonnage to the global RoRo market.
“With Stena RoRo’s extensive experience and market knowledge, combined with NAOS’ outstanding expertise in designing fuel-efficient RoRo and RoPax vessels, we have developed ships that are built for today and designed for tomorrow,” said Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo AB.
The first two vessels are scheduled for delivery in March and June 2029, with optional ships to follow at three-month intervals.
Construction will take place at China Merchants Industry (CMI) Weihai Shipyard, continuing a partnership that began in 2016 and has resulted in 17 vessels ordered to date, including E-Flexer RoPax vessels and two RoRo ships of the Stena NewMax design.
“The cooperation between CMI Weihai and Stena RoRo has been crucial to the success of the RoPax and RoRo concepts delivered so far,” Westling said. “It has enabled us to supply both Stena Line, as well as external customers, with tailor-made vessels delivered on time and with very high quality.”
Stena RoRo said the scalable hybrid system will allow battery capacity to be increased over time, enabling the ships to progressively reduce emissions and move towards fully electric operation.
