Propeller performance is proving to be a worthwhile efficiency lever for Adria Ferries, which says its AF MIA has reduced fuel consumption by 2-3% following the application of Propspeed to its propeller blades.
The coating was applied in March 2026, with the operator’s analysis showing the ferry used around 0.6-0.7 tonnes less fuel per crossing afterwards. That amounted to an estimated 56 tonnes of fuel saved during the first three months.
The comparison was made using the same B20 biofuel before and after the application, with AF MIA operating on the Ancona-Durrës route between Italy and Albania.
Adria Ferries’ fleet manager and COO, Commander Salvatore Della Rocca, said the company believes the coating can reasonably be credited with an average 2-3% fuel consumption benefit.
The result highlights how incremental efficiency measures can add up on high-frequency ferry routes, where even modest reductions in fuel use are repeated across hundreds of crossings.
