China has completed its first bio-LNG bunkering operation, marking the first supply of the fuel as a marine fuel.

The operation took place on December 3 at the Xizhongdao Terminal, where COSCO’s Xingshengyuan vessel received bio-LNG supplied by Anhui Wanbo Energy and bunkered by Sinopec COSCO Shipping Fuel Supply.

The bio-LNG is produced from biomethane derived from organic waste and has been certified under the ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS schemes. According to the companies involved, the fuel delivers lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 80% compared with conventional fossil LNG.

The Xingshengyuan is an LNG dual-fuel gas carrier, allowing it to operate on low-carbon fuels such as bio-LNG.

The bunkering was completed with support from local maritime authorities, which worked with the companies involved to ensure safe operations.
