LNG supplied to ships in Spanish ports more than quadrupled over the past two years, exceeding 8.1 TWh in 2025, according to Gasnam, a Madrid-based industry association representing companies involved in gas and renewable fuels for mobility.
Gasnam said more than 12% of the volumes supplied last year were already of renewable origin in the form of bio-LNG.
The total energy delivered was equivalent to the fuel required to fill the tanks of around 16 million cars.
The growth has been driven by the expanding global fleet of LNG-fuelled vessels and the development of bunkering infrastructure, which has strengthened Spain’s position as a regional hub for alternative marine fuels.
The association said ship-to-ship bunkering accounted for 80% of LNG supply operations in 2025, up from 44% a year earlier, reflecting a shift towards more flexible and efficient delivery models.
In Portugal, LNG bunkering began in 2025, with 342 GWh supplied across 13 operations, mainly at the port of Sines.
According to DNV, the Oslo-based classification society and maritime data provider, LNG remained the leading alternative fuel choice for newbuilds in 2025, accounting for 31% of gross tonnage ordered, with the global LNG-fuelled fleet now approaching 1,500 vessels, including ships on order.
