Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), a liquefied natural gas storage and regasification plant at the Port of Bilbao in Spain, has launched a bio-LNG loading service after obtaining ISCC certification, the company said this week.

BBG, jointly owned by the Basque Energy Agency and Enagás and located in northern Spain, can now manage and supply bioLNG — biomethane of renewable origin — with certified traceability at its Bilbao facilities. The certification, secured following an ISCC audit completed on December 15, 2025, allows the plant to begin handling the renewable fuel.

The new service enables bio-LNG loading into both trucks and vessels. ISCC certification confirms compliance with European Commission sustainability criteria and ensures traceability of the biomethane used to supply the bioLNG.

The offering is based on an interconnected infrastructure model set out in EU Regulation 996/2022. Under this system, biomethane can be injected into the gas grid by producers and later purchased alongside Proofs of Sustainability (PoS) that verify emissions reductions linked to the supplied fuel.

BBG said the model allows it to connect biomethane producers with users of the regasification plant, enabling LNG cargoes of renewable origin to be certified without requiring operational changes to existing bunkering or loading procedures.

The service began in January 2026, with the company saying the move supports the energy transition and expands its service portfolio for customers across the gas and shipping value chain.
