Adrian Tolson said the global marine fuel market has moved beyond a phase of short-term disruption, with recent geopolitical tensions exposing deeper structural weaknesses across the bunker supply chain.

“Recent developments in the Arabian Gulf, alongside the vulnerability of critical transit points such as the Straits of Hormuz, have exposed fundamental weaknesses in global energy systems—particularly within the bunker supply chain. While the industry has responded with resilience and maintained supply across key hubs, the broader implications are significant and long-lasting.

Energy security is now a defining priority.

Even if geopolitical tensions ease, the industry is likely to experience sustained changes in supply dynamics, pricing structures, and an accelerated transition toward alternative fuels. This is not the same market we knew just a few months ago. The bunker value chain is evolving in real time, requiring adaptability, collaboration, and forward-looking strategies.

IBIA and its members are well positioned to support the industry through this transition, providing stability, practical insight, and a platform for meaningful collaboration.”
