Maersk Starts Bunker Redistribution as Gulf Disruption Hits

A.P. Moller–Maersk has begun redistributing bunker fuel across its network as disruption in the Middle East starts to affect global supply patterns.

The Copenhagen-based container shipping firm said that while overall fuel availability remains sufficient, disruption to flows from the Gulf — a key source of marine fuel — is creating imbalances in bunker supply across regions.

“There is currently sufficient fuel globally, but it is unevenly distributed,” the company said.

With exports from the region constrained amid the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Maersk said it is moving fuel between locations to ensure vessels can continue to bunker at key ports.

The company added it is reworking its fuel supply chain and redistributing bunkers to avoid localised shortages and maintain stability across its global operations.

The shift highlights a growing secondary impact of the conflict: rather than a global shortage, the market is facing dislocation, with tighter availability in some hubs likely to increase complexity for voyage planning and bunker procurement.

Maersk said the measures are aimed at safeguarding network reliability as conditions in the region remain uncertain.
