Japan-based NS United Kaiun Kaisha (NSU) has signed a contract with Rio Tinto for two 209,000 dwt dual-fuel methanol-capable vessels.

The Newcastlemax bulk carriers are scheduled for delivery from 2028 and will be fitted with engines able to run on methanol, positioning them for lower-emission operations if the fuel becomes available at scale.

Methanol produced from renewable or non-fossil sources has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aligns with the decarbonisation strategy of the International Maritime Organization.

Rio Tinto said any future use of methanol will depend on fuel availability, safety, and regulatory considerations, reflecting its broader strategy to keep fuel options open.

The deal builds on a longstanding relationship between the two companies, with both highlighting shared priorities around safety, crew welfare, and operational performance, while supporting efforts to cut emissions across the maritime supply chain.

The vessels will measure about 300 metres in length with a beam of 50 metres and a deadweight of roughly 209,000 tonnes.
