Portland Port has been granted approval to carry out LNG ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operations, enabling bunkering activities within Portland Harbour.

The authorisation means vessels can now receive LNG fuel directly at the port, alongside STS transfer capability.

Commercial director Ian McQuade confirmed that both services are now available in the harbour.

Positioned on England’s south-west coast, the port lies around 20 nautical miles from major English Channel shipping routes, giving it access to passing deep-sea traffic with 24/7 availability.

According to the port, the STS licence allows LNG transfers to be handled locally, helping to cut transit requirements and simplify logistics while utilising established marine infrastructure.

The addition enhances Portland Port’s offering as LNG continues to gain traction as a lower-emission marine fuel option.
