Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched a new Biofuel Advisory service during London International Shipping Week to support shipowners, fuel suppliers and producers in adopting biofuels safely and at scale.

The initiative combines LR’s energy transition advisory with the technical expertise of its Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS), which has more than 20 years of experience with biofuels.

The service offers end-to-end support across the supply chain, from production and certification through to delivery and onboard use, helping clients assess regulatory compliance, fuel performance and operational risks.

LR has already worked with producers, bunker suppliers and shipowners on biofuel uptake, including several industry firsts such as UECC’s use of cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) and Whitaker Tankers’ FAME B100 certification.

James Frew, Director of Lloyd’s Register Advisory, said: “Biofuels represent an immediate and practical solution, but owners need confidence on performance, safety and compliance. Our new Biofuel Advisory service brings together technical expertise and regulatory insight to provide the industry with confidence and clarity at every stage of the biofuel supply and adoption process.”

The service was launched at LR’s Fuel For Thought: The Biofuel Briefing event during the shipping week, where experts discussed biofuel strategy, supply, safety, and regulatory considerations. LR has also published a new Fuel for Thought: Biofuel report compiling the latest insights on biofuel adoption in shipping.
