Klaipėda Port is finalising its first quay electrification scheme with the installation of an onshore power supply station at the Port Authority’s Fleet Base.

The unit will undergo testing before the end of the year and is designed to serve a new hydrogen- and electric-powered waste collection vessel set to join the fleet in late 2025.

“By the end of this year, the first clean-fuel vessel will arrive, and our new charging equipment at the Fleet Base will be ready to serve it, says Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

“This is only the beginning – by 2030 ships at berth will have to switch off engines and use shore power, and we’re preparing to meet that demand,” says Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The project, worth almost EUR 601,000 including VAT, has been financed directly by the Port Authority and carried out by Elektrifikacijos paslaugos under a contract signed at the end of last year.

Additional OPS stations are in the pipeline. Four facilities for ro-ro vessels are scheduled to be in place by 2026, with similar connections for cruise and container ships to follow.
