US shipbuilder Conrad Shipyard and South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore joint opportunities in the US LNG bunkering vessel market.

The two companies will assess technical, commercial and market initiatives related to the design, construction and deployment of LNG bunkering vessels suited to US regulations and operating conditions.

The collaboration is intended to combine SHI’s experience in LNG ship technology with Conrad’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities and familiarity with US regulatory requirements.

A representative of Samsung Heavy Industries said the partnership would support SHI’s plans to enter the US LNG bunkering market while also contributing to the revitalisation of the US shipbuilding sector.

Johnny Conrad, executive chairman of Conrad Shipyard, said the MOU reflects the company’s focus on driving innovation in the US maritime industry and positioning both companies to meet growing demand for LNG bunkering vessels.

Conrad said its experience in LNG bunkering vessel design, engineering and construction, combined with SHI’s LNG technology, could help support the development of the US LNG bunkering market.
