Taiwan-based container shipping line Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has carried out the first LNG bunkering of its new 15,500 TEU dual-fuel vessel YM Willpower in Singapore, marking a further step in its energy transition strategy.
The vessel, deployed on the Far East–Mediterranean MD2 service, bunkered around 3,500 mt of LNG on February 26 through collaboration with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Shell Eastern Trading (Pte) Ltd.
The LNG will serve as the ship’s primary fuel for the entire voyage.
Yang Ming said the inaugural operation was conducted at anchorage under stringent safety protocols, with the vessel proceeding directly to berth afterwards to begin cargo operations.
As an additional 15,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels enter service in 2026, the company expects LNG use to cut CO₂ emissions by about 20% compared with conventional marine fuel, while reducing SOx by around 99% and particulate matter by roughly 85%.
Alongside LNG adoption and biofuel use, Yang Ming has launched its “YM ECO Sea” green transport solution. The initiative applies a Book and Claim mechanism aligned with EU RED II and the GLEC Framework, enabling customers to account for verified CO₂ reductions and lower Scope 3 supply chain emissions.
