Italy-based Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the Grande Tokyo, an ammonia-ready pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) built in Shanghai.

The vessel was delivered on April 17 following a christening ceremony attended by representatives from the owner and shipyard, highlighting the international collaboration behind the programme.

Grande Tokyo is the last of seven sister vessels constructed at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. (CSTC), bringing to a close a strategic investment programme aimed at modernising Grimaldi’s vehicle carrier fleet.

With a capacity of over 9,200 CEU, the vessel is equipped with advanced technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, while its ammonia-ready design positions it for a potential transition to zero-carbon fuels as they become available.

The ship is also the tenth ammonia-ready PCTC in the group’s fleet, underlining its broader strategy to align with tightening environmental regulations and evolving customer requirements.

The naming of the vessel reflects Japan’s growing importance within Grimaldi’s global network, according to the company.

Following delivery, the Grande Tokyo is set to begin its maiden voyage from China to Brazil, transporting vehicles along one of the key intercontinental trade routes for the automotive sector.

Grimaldi said the completed series of vessels has helped set new benchmarks in efficiency and environmental performance in the car carrier segment, as the company continues to invest in future-ready tonnage and lower-emission shipping solutions.
