New Delhi, March 04, 2024: Operations have started at the LNG import terminal “Terminal Gas Sul,” in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The terminal is poised to become an essential infrastructure for the import of LNG in Brazil.

The LNG import terminal is owned by the US-based energy infrastructure company, New Fortress Energy (NFE). The operations on the terminal began with the arrival of the 138,250 m3 capacity FSRU, “ENERGOS WINTER.” In November 2023, NFE signed an agreement with Petrobras to sub-chart the FSRU.

Terminal Gas Sul is an offshore LNG import terminal with a capacity of 6 million metric tons per year and can send out 500 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. NFE has claimed the terminal has promising prospects and presents a high growth opportunity for the company according to the reports published in fleetmon.com.

The terminal is connected via a pipeline to the Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolívia-Brasil (TBG) pipeline, which supplies Brazil. NFE has stated that while historically the main source of gas supply in the area has been Bolivia, they are projecting the supplies from this front to diminish. With this in sight, they expect the TGS terminal to become increasingly essential.

The terminal has inked an agreement with Ceiba Energy to expand its power-associated assets linked to the Brazilian energy markets. This agreement will increase their capacity reserve by 1.6 GW and allow them to meet the growing demand for LNG that NFE is predicting.

In addition, the terminal is directly connected to over 3.5 GW of existing power-generating infrastructure that does not have signed contracts for procuring the natural gas needed for operation. TGS aims to get this market stake, further increasing its importance for the terminal.
