Lomarlabs has partnered with Advanced Wing Systems to move a proven sail technology into its next commercial phase, focusing on containerised, fully automated wing sails designed for large-scale use in commercial shipping.

The collaboration targets practical decarbonisation, with the wing sail units designed to be installed during standard port calls. This removes the need for vessels to enter drydock or go off-hire, making the technology easier to adopt across existing fleets.

The containerised design also allows flexibility in how the sails are used. Operators will be able to lease the wings for a single voyage or for longer periods, such as a time charter, and install multiple units on one vessel to maximise fuel savings.

Once in operation, the wing sails work autonomously, using AI-driven systems to respond to real-time wind conditions. This allows vessels to reduce fuel consumption without adding extra workload for crews.

The technology builds on experience gained in ocean racing and has been adapted for the operational and durability requirements of commercial shipping.

lomarlabs said the project reflects its focus on solutions that are practical, financeable and capable of delivering real emissions reductions at sea.
