Northern Lights has received its third liquefied CO₂ carrier, Northern Phoenix, following the vessel’s delivery on 2 December 2025 at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore in China.

The ship is part of a four-vessel programme supporting what is considered the world’s first commercial-scale CO₂ transport and storage network.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE) has signed both bareboat and time charter agreements with Northern Lights for three of the four vessels, including Northern Phoenix. The carrier will be technically managed by K LINE ENERGY SHIPPING (UK) LIMITED in London, as with the earlier Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder.

The new ship will transport liquefied CO₂ captured from emitters outside Norway to Northern Lights’ receiving terminal in Øygarden. By enabling cross-border movements of captured carbon, the vessel will support the wider rollout of CCS as an industrial decarbonisation solution in Europe.

K LINE said it plans to use the operational experience gained from LNG-fuelled CO₂ carriers to support its Environmental Vision 2050 and future low-carbon initiatives.
