The Port of San Diego and the Pasha Group have achieved a US first by successfully commissioning a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel for shore power at the National City Marine Terminal.

On 29 October 2025, Pasha Hawaii’s MV Jean Anne connected to the new shore power system, allowing the vessel to draw electricity from the local grid instead of burning diesel while at berth. The system passed all tests and will be used during future port calls.

The $6.6 million installation, including $2.5 million in grant funding from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust, supports the Port’s Maritime Clean Air Strategy and CARB’s At-Berth Regulation.

Port officials said the project will reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, and diesel particulates.

“This accomplishment cannot be understated – it means healthier and happier people and families in National City,” said Port Chair Danielle Moore.

The achievement follows other clean-air milestones at the port, including the deployment of all-electric tugs and cranes, and underscores San Diego’s position as an early leader in maritime electrification.
